Ijen Geopark Officially Becomes a UNESCO Global Geopark Member

Ijen Geopark is officially designated as a member of UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG). This determination was made through the 216th UNESCO Executive Council meeting in Paris, France on Wednesday (24/5/2023). The results of this trial were released through the UNESCO website.

Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani welcomed this with gratitude and joy. It says, Banyuwangi is ready to bring Ijen Geopark to the international tourism scene.

“Alhamdulillah, after going through various processes and trials, finally Ijen Geopark officially became a member of UGG. This is based on official letters and releases uploaded on the UNESCO website,” said Ipuk Fiestiandani, Friday (26/5/2023).

Banyuwangi residents should be proud, The Ijen Geopark is part of 195 UGG sites scattered across 48 country. The Ijen Geopark is also the only geological site in Indonesia that has been assigned the highest score in history this year, that is 872 banding 1.000.

Now, the name Geopark Ijen is side by side with the world's geological sites. Seperti Caçapava (Brazil), Lavreotiki (Greece), Aras (Iran), Hakusan Tedorigawa (Japan) and a number of other world sites.

“Hopefully with the appointment of Ijen as UGG, increasingly increasing foreign tourist visits to Banyuwangi. So that it will have an impact on the welfare and strengthening of the culture of the people of Banyuwangi,” said Ipuk.

Known, The boundaries of the Ijen Geopark area are spread from Banyuwangi to Bondowoso. Ijen Geopark Daily Manager (BEAK) Banyuwangi, Abdillah Baraas revealed, The official determination of Ijen Geopark does not only talk about the ancient volcano at Ijen.

Abdillah called, all areas that are part of the formation of volcanoes, including volcanoes in the southern region which have now become beaches in Banyuwangi. There are a number of things to note, namely infrastructure improvements and additional signposts.

“Ijen Geopark is also included yesterday which became a note adding signboards in conservation areas such as in Alas Purwo. Additional provision of transportation equipment in remote areas and road infrastructure in areas that are difficult to access,” explained Abdillah.

It says, it takes efforts to develop and maintain the status of Ijen Geopark as a member of UNESCO to 2026 coming. Collaboration of all parties, starting from policy makers at the district and provincial levels, academics who utilize geological sites, mass media related to development and tourism promotion, as well as the private sector in empowerment must be strengthened.

“We still have to work hard, make improvements in various aspects so that we can maintain UGG status during the revalidation period 2026 coming. Of course in collaboration with related parties,” said Abdillah.

Known, this determination by UNESCO together with three other places originating from Indonesia. That is, Geopark Maros (Pangkep), Winking (Jambi), and Raja Ampat (Papua). The plan, UGG certificate submission will be submitted in Morocco in September 2023.
