Ipuk Regent Opens Banyuwangi Literacy Week Festival

The wealth of literacy in Banyuwangi is displayed in the Literacy Week Festival at the Banyuwangi Regency Regional Library Office, Monday (22/5/2023). The festival presents various forms of literacy that have developed since stone was still a writing medium to the digital era.

The festival was held on Attorney General Suprapto's street, opened directly by the Regent of Banyuwangi Ipuk Fiestiandani. According to him, This activity is part of an effort to increase public interest in reading.

“We want to invite people to increase their interest in reading. So, We design this event as attractive as possible to invite people to visit the library and love reading,” said Ipuk.

By increasing the quality of public interest in reading, added Ipuk, will have an impact on regional progress. “With strong literacy, will certainly have an impact on increasing human resources. With good HR, regional progress will be more easily achieved,” clear.

Meanwhile, Head of the Regional Library and Archives Office of Banyuwangi Regency, Zen Kastolani, explained that this event lasted for a week. Starting from 22 – 27 May 2023. “Visitors can visit every day starting at 08.00 until 21.00,” clear.

In the festival, visitors can watch the literacy exhibition which is divided into four showrooms. The first room presents information about Banyuwangi which is recorded in temple reliefs or inscriptions.

“Among them is the story of Sritanjung which is recorded in the Penataran Temple, Surowono Temple, Gapura Bajang Ratu and Jabung Temple,” explained Zen.

The next room displays a wealth of ancient manuscripts. The scripts displayed are scripts that are still sustainable and live in the midst of the Banyuwangi community with various mocoan rituals. Like Lontar Yusuf, Trade Hadith, Juwarsah and Sri Tanjung.

“These ancient texts have been transliterated, translated and published by the Regional Library,” said Zen.

The next showroom displays the wealth of literary literacy in Banyuwangi when it entered the printing press era. Various written works such as novels were born, poetry anthology, literary criticism to various literary and cultural journals.

There is also an exhibition room which displays various old photographs taken by a photo journalist from Banyuwangi which were published in Sin Po magazine during the colonial period..

“All of this is integrated with the reading room of the Regional Library which can be accessed conventionally or digitally,” Zen explained.

Apart from exhibitions, This week is also filled with various activities. One of them is the archipelago script workshop, book reviews and workshops. In the evening it is also filled with various artistic expressions and musical stages.

“Who wants to follow, can come directly to the library. Free,” he concluded.
