Report on Alleged Violence by Officers Against Pakel Residents, Komnas HAM Deploys Team to the Field

In a press statement on the official website of the Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights, on Wednesday 16 January 2022 has received complaints from representatives of Pakel Village residents, Licin District, Banyuwangi Regency, related to the violence experienced by residents of Pakel Village on Friday (14/012022) by Banyuwangi Police officers.

Residents complained to the National Human Rights Commission accompanied by the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) East Java and the Legal Aid Institute (LBH) Surabaya. In addition to complaining about violence, residents also complained about land conflicts involving Cultivation Rights (HGU) plantations in the region.

Regarding the complaint, Komnas HAM RI immediately responded and responded by coordinating with the Police and sending a team to the field. In addition, Komnas HAM RI also asked for information from the parties, including the Police so that the incident became clear.

Furthermore, Komnas HAM RI asked the police to work more humanely, persuasive and protects the rights of citizens who are fighting for their rights by not resorting to violence or other forms of action that are inconsistent with human rights principles. This news was denied by the Head of the Banyuwangi Police, Kombes Pol Nasrun Pasaribu S.I.K, who said that there was news of persecution against the residents of Pakel Village., Licin District, Banyuwangi, by its members is not true and needs to be clarified. “The news of the persecution is not true. Our members do not commit acts of violence at all, ” said Kombes Pol Nasrun Pasaribu S.I.K., told reporters Thursday (14/1/2022).

Nasrun said, at that time its members were on patrol at the Bumisari Plantation, Songgon whose HGU is in Pakel Village, Licin District, Thursday (13/1/2022). “while on patrol there, then there was a ambush by the residents. So that our members hold face-to-face meetings with these residents and communicate humanely, ” Nasrun explained.

After that, Nasrun continued, the communication went well, then its members returned to the Licin Police Headquarters. “If indeed there are our members who really make mistakes (persecution), then we will enforce the law. But if someone from the community makes a mistake, we will enforce the law as well. So that there is a balance according to the actual facts, ” strictly.
