ROGOJAMPI – Residents of Jajang Surat Hamlet, Karangbendo Village, Rogojampi Kecamatan District, Banyuwangi, have a unique tradition. They held a parade of dozens of fast and ondel horses- ondel to celebrate the Islamic new year.
The parade of tens of kencak jaran took place on the streets of Jajang Surat Hamlet yesterday afternoon (7/11). Even though the hot weather burned the village streets that afternoon, hundreds of children with the hadrah group performed enthusiastically.
They walked down the route that had been set since 12.00. In addition to the line of children, what attracts the attention of the people is the art of horse riding. There is at least 20 horse tail that participates in the parade.
The horses that have been dressed up with equipment made of cloth and beads gathered at the T-junction of Dusun Singles Surat.. Don't miss a few horse carriages and dozens of hadrah groups getting ready too.
After all gathered, around 14.30 the procession of ornamental horses is walking around the village road. They also pass through the busy route at Rogojampi Market. Along the way, The horse followed- the accompaniment of the song played by the hadrah group.
So that, the horses seem to dance to the rhythm. Do not miss, there are four ondel-ondel in the form of big male and female dolls. The giant doll is wearing the typical clothing of the Oseng tribe; jengebeng and tulitu.
The doll jebeng and tulik danced behind the procession of fast horses. Meanwhile, some youths seem to be carrying cans to ask for donations. Later the collected donations will be given to orphans.
After walking around, It's the turn of jaran kencak and averse to being invited to dance together in front of the stage at the recitation location. According to local residents, this activity is considered as part of a ritual to beg for congratulations at the beginning of the Islamic year.
The highlight of the event is the giving of compensation to orphans. Nidhom, 34, one of the residents who prepared the procession, said the activity was carried out to commemorate the beginning of the Hijri New Year or Suroan in Javanese terms.
There are fast horses, Ondel Ondel, and flying group (gift), that becomes one of the additional entertainment to attract the audience. Because the core of the event is giving compensation, then with something unique, the audience will be more.
“Last year we were able to collect Rp 8 million from the donations of citizens who watch. Besides that, The event is also awaited by the owner of the kencak jaran and flying group every year, because here they can perform,” clear Nidhom. (radar)
