Samuel Wattimena Ready to Collaborate with Regional Designers at Banyuwangi Batik Festival

BANYUWANGI – Banyuwangi again holds the Batik Festival. This annual event, which is held to raise the competitiveness of regional batik craftsmen, will be held at Gesibu Blambangan, Banyuwangi, Saturday (23/11/2019) night.

Reported from banyuwangikab.go.id, Banyuwangi Regent Abdullah Azwar Anas said Banyuwangi Batik Festival (BBF) is a stage for Banyuwangi batik artists to be creative in displaying their work.

Where local batik actors will collaborate with national designers to present 115 Banyuwangi typical batik design in a fashion parade.

“We collaborate with Banyuwangi batik SMEs with well-known national and international designers. Big names of national top designers, such as Samuel Wattimena and Sofie will also present their work in the event which has entered its 7th year. There are also eight national designers involved in BBF this week,” said Regent Anas.

The name Samuel Wattimena is already familiar in the world of the homeland fashion industry. This fashion designer from Maluku is known for his faithful work in bringing up Indonesian fabrics in his works.

And at the Banyuwangi Batik Festival (BBF) tomorrow, Samuel will show 10 fashion design with the main material of Banyuwangi batik fabric.

“We deliberately bring these famous designers here to encourage local designers to do more great work,” said Regent Anas.

“The designers will share their knowledge with local designers in a fashion designing workshop to enrich their work,” he said.

In the BBF later, these national designers will appear side by side with local designers. Previously, Banyuwangi batik designers have been empowered with various trainings to improve their quality.

Including, Fashion designs designed by SMK students which are also no less interesting are also displayed.

“At last year's event, the works of regional designers managed to steal the attention of the visitors. Many do not expect local designers, even high school students, can present a fashion design that is no less interesting,” said Regent Anas.

“Many Banyuwangi batik designers and actors continue to exist and grow, like Sanet Sabintang, Isham Syamsi, Ridho, Olys, and many more. Banyuwangi Batik Festival belongs to local craftsmen to be able to partner with national fashion actors,” he added.

Meanwhile, Head of Department of Industry and Trade, Si Wahyudi said, each implementation, BBF always raises one original Banyuwangi batik motif.

“This year, it was the turn of the “Blarak Sempal” motif which became the central theme raised,” said Sih.

Blarak is an old coconut leaf. Like a coconut leaf that is rectangular, even this motive. The shape is in the form of oblique lines arranged in rows and opposite each other between the banjars.

“The philosophical meaning, Coconut leaves with neatly parallel leaf veins from the beginning of growth to drying have the same shape. This symbolizes togetherness that is nurtured from young to old,” said Sih.

Event BBF ini, go on, have the full support of the fashion designer association, Indonesia Fashion Chamber (IFC).
A number of well-known fashion designers who are members of the IFC will be involved in BBF, among others Ali Charisma, Yunita Kosasih, Alphiana Chandrayani, albums, Agus Suhandar, Farhan from Ye-eti.

“All designers will display two types of clothing, namely office and casual clothing made from batik with the Blarak sempal motif,” he concluded.

Accompanying the implementation of this year's batik festival, a number of series of activities were held. Start a batik fashion design competition (20/11), fashion workshop for vocational students (30/10 – 5/11), hingga Fashion on the Pedestrian (22/11).
