BANYUWANGI – Integrated Waste Processing Site Reduce Reuse Recycle (TPS 3R) Balak, capacity 84 tons per day, in Balak Village, Songgon District, Banyuwangi begins operations, Saturday (16/9/2023). Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani inaugurated the TPS which was fully supported by the Norwegian government.

This TPST is a circular and sustainable waste processing as part of the Green Banyuwangi program initiative.

“Waste leaks into the environment can be prevented through the cooperation of all stakeholders. Through the Green Banyuwangi Program initiative, we work together to make real improvements to the health of the environment and the people of Banyuwangi," said Ipuk Fiestiandani, Banyuwangi Regent, when inaugurating Balak TPS.

Also present was the Minister for Administrative Reform and Bureaucratic Reform, Abdullah Azwar Anas, and the Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rut Kruger Griverin.

The Green Banyuwangi program has involved at least 800 drivers of change from community groups, district government, districts, village, academic group, and community organizations.

“I hope that this facility will not only be a place for processing waste but also a center for education and inspiration for the community,” said Ipuk.

This TPST is an implementation of the Green Banyuwangi program, as a waste control effort, especially plastic by sorting waste directly from households.

Green Banyuwangi itself is a continuation of Project Stop (Stop Ocean Plastics) which has been successfully implemented in Muncar District since 2018 by NGO PT. Systemiq Lestari Indonesia, funded by the Norwegian government and the Borealis business institution from Austria.

Construction of Balak TPS, The Banyuwangi Regency Government allocated more than 1,5 hectares of land with capacity to cultivate 84 tons of waste per day, and is able to serve the waste processing needs of six surrounding sub-districts.

The service capacity of this TPS is approx 250.000 residents or 55.491 house. This facility is equipped with waste processing technology, including a conveyor belt, baler, composting equipment, waste transportation vehicle.

TPS Balak has also been equipped to efficiently process organic and non-organic waste which mostly comes from households in the service area. In the future, the operation of this facility is expected to be able to employ approx 200 full-scale employees.

Mark Horcher, Director Sustainability & Public Affairs, Borealis, said Banyuwangi Hijau was an expansion of the reach of waste management in Muncar in 2018 2018 via Project STOP.

“We hope that this initiative can become an inspiration and blueprint for other programs to accelerate the realization of a circular economy and avoid waste pollution into the environment,” said Markus Horcher.
