BANYUWANGI – A climber of Mount Ijen died this morning (12/11). The victim is known as Budi Raharjo, (60), a doctor from Jember.

“The victim died while descending from the crater of Mount Ijen and according to his family, The victim has a history of asthma,” said the Head of the Conservation Section for Region V Banyuwangi BKSDA, East Java, Sumpena in Banyuwangi.

The victim managed to climb all the way to the top and then down to the crater, a few moments later the person concerned fainted and was evacuated down to Paltuding.

Based on information from the family, Budi Raharja who is also the former Director of the Regional Hospital (RSD) Dr. Soebandi, Jember Regency, died when he arrived in Paltuding, Even the victim was taken to the Licin Health Center and was declared dead after being examined by the local health center health officer.

“The tour guide has actually conveyed to the victim that tourists who have a history of asthma, heart, and hypertension are prohibited from climbing to Mount Ijen, but the victim is still determined to climb,” he said.

After being declared dead, The victim's body was immediately evacuated to Blambangan Hospital to be taken to a funeral home in Jember Regency by using a corpse ambulance belonging to a local hospital..

Meanwhile, BKSDA has also installed a notice board that mentions visitors who have asthma, heart, and high blood pressure is prohibited from going up to the crater of Mount Ijen because the sulfur fumes from the crater of Ijen can cause dizziness, nauseous, and dangerous for people with asthma.

“We hope that all tourists can comply with the appeals and prohibitions that have been conveyed by officers at the Paltuding Post because climbing to the mountain which has the beauty of blue fire requires excellent physical and stamina.,” he concluded.
