A Tour Guide Dies in a Fall in the Ijen Crater

BANYUWANGI – A tourist guide or guide known as Hariyan Edy Santoso alias Bronto (38) residents of Rejopuro Hamlet, Village village, Glagah District, found dead while guiding a tour at the Nature Tourism Park (TWA) Ijen Crater.

Reported from Detik.com, The guide was found dead after falling from the lip of Mount Ijen towards the crater or around the sulfur mining area. This accident was only discovered at approx 05.00 WIB, Saturday (20/4/2019) morning.

Licin Police Chief, AKP Hery Purnomo confirmed the incident. According to him, The poor guide was found dead by sulfur miners. Even though he was taken to the Licin Health Center, but his life could not be saved.

“Yes, that's true. But when he was found, he was already dead at the location. The information fell from the lips of the Mountain,” said AKP Hery Purnomo.

“Several eyewitnesses admitted that thick smoke was covering the peak of Ijen at the time of the incident. However, this guide was determined to go down to see the blue fire,” he added.

Ijen's unfriendly condition at that time was confirmed by one of the guides, Hairul. According to him, Thick smoke from burning sulfur makes it difficult for guides and tourists to get down.

“The smoke is really bad. I don't even dare go down,” he said.
